IEP, ESE, SWD, OMG!

led by: Cody Puckett

Are you confused about all these acronyms and what they mean? What is an IEP? What is an ESE student? Is ESE the same as SWD? What does it all mean? In this session, we will be addressing disability awareness and having the proper knowledge and skills needed when working with a student with a disability at a minimal level of knowledge. More and more music educators are not properly equipped when adapting the music curriculum to everyone’s needs. It is so important that we make music education accessible and equitable for all students that are in our classroom!

PRESENTER BIO:

Adaptive Music Educator, Horizons Elementary School

My name is Cody Puckett (he/him/his). I have studied Deaf Education and Music Education at Flagler College, received my Masters in Special Education at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) and now onto learning and growing to bridge the gap between music education and special education. Currently, I work for Polk County Public School District, teaching at Horizons Elementary as their Adaptive Music Educator for students with exceptionalities. I have previously taught at Davenport High School as the American Sign Language (ASL) educator.  I have prior experience working at a Learning Center at Karen M. Siegel Academy. I served as their special music educator who worked with all students and their varying levels of ability in my music classroom. I want to continue to help future and current music educators to be prepared when working with their exceptional student population and how to properly accommodate/modify based on all students needs and abilities.
